Buy a Song for Sandy Hook: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"

Like the rest of the world, Rock Turtleneck has been deeply saddened and affected by the horrible events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT last month. Newtown is only a half-hour or so from the RT home base, and without getting into details, we have several friends who were directly affected by the shooting.

Music, that mighty healer, is doing its job in Newtown. Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, the world-class husband-and-wife rhythm section of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club fame, who are longtime Connecticut residents, teamed up with producer/CBGB co-owner Tim Hayes and singer-songwriter-ukelelist Ingrid Michaelson to help a group of Sandy Hook students record a version of the Wizard of Oz standard "Over the Rainbow" to benefit the the non-profit Newtown Youth Academy and the United Way of Western Connecticut.

The choir was led by Newtown music teacher Sabrina Post and it was recorded at Chris & Tina's nearby home studio.


A few years back, the music associations RIAA and NEA voted "Over the Rainbow" the greatest song of the 20th Century by, and I think the Newtown version has already taken a place as one of the most touching versions ever.

This morning, the kids of Sandy Hook sang "Over the Rainbow" on Good Morning America, and even if you have the iciest of ice water running through your veins, this should thaw it.
