Some rock & roll rivalries are inevitable, like the Davies brothers or Oasis vs. Blur. But the one between Miley Cyrus & Radiohead? That one I didn't see coming.
Apparently, Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana is totally peeved because Radiohead aka the Greatest Band in the World, rebuffed her request for a backstage visit during last month's Grammy Awards.
Interviewed on an LA radio program, a miffed Miley said Thom Yorke & Co. would not come meet her or let her visit their dressing room, even though Cyrus was only four rooms away.
"If someone, like, said that, like, 'I would cry if I met them. I really want to meet them,' I would freaking, like, run and, like, give them the biggest hug in the world because that's cool, you know?" a livid Cyrus said. "But they were like, 'We don't really do that.'"
Adding insult to injury was, said Cyrus, "I had already texted all my friends!"
In one of the tartest, most British rejoinders in recent pop culture history, a rep for Radiohead said "When Miley grows up, she'll learn not to have such a sense of entitlement."
Miley, like most teens, isn't one to move on. "I'm gonna ruin them," she said of Radiohead. "I'm going to tell everyone."
That would be something, if Miley Cyrus were to single-handedly bring down the sonic architects of OK Computer. But I believe her when she said she is "freakishly obsessed" with them.
I have two daughters right in the Cyrus demographic; in fact, I have probably listened to her 2008 opus Breakout more times than Hail to the Thief. And while much of the record is relatively pleasant teen-dance-pop like you would expect, one song bears an undeniable Radiohead influence: “Fly on the Wall.”
The first time I heard the track, my thought was “This sounds like The Cramps.” I was also reminded of XTC's fun English Settlement B-side of the same name. Unlike the XTC song, which seems to be about insects, Cyrus's fly on the wall is a canny metaphor for those pesky paparazzi.
But hearing about her love for Radiohead, I realized that in between concerts, home schooling and semi-nude photoshoots with Annie Leibovitz, Miley's been giving In Rainbows some heavy rotation.
